Name: Hometown: Brussels 43 Sent: 9.49 PM - sun 31 oct 2004 I have an infuriating habit of 'catching things' - kicking bits of the house with my shoes, or picking up coathangers with something 'caught' on the end. It got to the point where I would mutter to myself "He-ho, here goes the Catcher in the Rye again", to the point that I decided, intruiged at the notion, to go and actually read the novel, 25 years or so after it'd been recommended to me at school (a recommendation I'd not hitherto followed). I was to gaze with stunned awe at the pages of my Penguin edition at how many parallels I saw between HC and myself and devoured the novel in a few days. I had been aware of 'controversy' surrounding the book, and so started scouring the Net for further leads, and came upon your site: it has elucidated and explained a great deal, and I thank you. I had never thought that one, relatively short, novel could generate so much dialogue. How accurate Salinger is at expressing Holden's genuine confusion Name: 53 Sent: 12.46 AM - thu 13 may 2004 I believe you need a balanced set of views for your appreciation of Catcher. I did not enjoy it, and felt it was inconsistent. I could not buy into any of the characters. I did feel that some of the characterisations had some colour and validity, which was its only redeeming feature. Just because someone is not a fan, I can't see how it makes them a moron. Judge not, lest ye be judged! Not that I'm a fan of the bible either, I think it's a load of bollocks. Nevetheless, it's a lot more readable than Catcher. Probably you are not remembering me... but I do remember the time, when you gave me the first insights in the English language. I think this website is a great idea and very helpful for your students - although I have to admit that I don't like the book at all. Perhaps I should try to read it again... I take this chance and thank you for being such a good English teacher. All these guys from from Australia, UK, USA in the guestbook... they have never seen you performing in class, but I did and I remember it vividly. Do you still give english nicknames to your youngest pupils? Mine was Allen, I never forgot. I remember many little moments and I really learned a lot, which was in fact useful for me, because I studied for a semester in Buffalo. Back in class you would proabably try to correct my definitely non-BBC-like upstate New York accent, but at least I was able to take senior classes there... which was only possible because you taught me the basics... A long talk for an easy word: Thank you! Name: Hometown: australia 16 Sent: 7.24 AM - tue 5 aug 2003 this book is so very true and relates to teenagers of even todays world. It is a book that you must really want to read but it relays a good message. The points in Holdens life even written 50 years ago are still highly relevant to todays youth. Name: Maya 16 Sent: 1.32 PM - tue 6 may 2003 I'm sorry, but I do not recognize anything from your summary. It's totally different from the book. You must have read another book, or did not read the book at all! Name: Hometown: Nashville, TN 18 Sent: 4.59 PM - sun 27 apr 2003 Did you even read the same book I did? Well if you did you must have not been concentrating hard enough on the main themes of the novel and barely scratching the surface. Catcher in the Rye is not about an annoying and complaining teenager, but about a boy who has lost his innocence when his brother Allie dies. He refuses to accept this loss which is why he behaves in the manner in which he does. The other main theme of the novel is the protection of innocence which explains his closeness to his sister Phoebe. SHe is still young nad innocent which makes her appeal to him more than those "phony" adults. Just to let you know Holden did not write obsentities on the wall at Phoebe's school, he was trying to erase them, because again he was trying to protect them. Did you even read the chapter that explained why Salinger chose that title. ONe last thing, you really need to explain mnore about how the carosel scene with Phoebe is the turning point of the novel, but who knows you might mess that up too. YOu probably wouldn't get the symbolism behind it. I just thought you should know what the book was really about before you give more bad information to vulnerable kids who don't want to think for themselves. I just wanted to tell u that u created one of the best pages i have ever seen (no kidding) I wrote my advanced English "Abiturklausur" today and ur page really helped. I was so much concentrating on the Cather the past days I didn't even have a look on Hemmingway's "Farewell To Arms", which was the other topic we could have written about. Anyways I wrote my last "Klausur" today and I'm done - I'm on winter break now. Gosh, I deserve it. The last thing I wanted to tell u was my Abitur task. Thought u might be interested in it my English teacher gave us a poem by Robert Frost NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. I don't remember the task word my word but we were asked to show the poems relevance (???) to the catcher-ideal and say what we think about the catcher dream. U really helped w/out knowing it thank u so much. Would be nice if I would hear from u. So long, Jana Name: Shepard Sent: 7.16 AM - fri 24 jan 2003 The release date of the supposed novella 'Hapworth' has fallen through. It was suppose to be the first new work in... Name: Hometown: Calgary, AB 27 Sent: 4.14 AM - tue 7 jan 2003 Your website is simply a fantastic example of what information on the web should represent. Nothing necessarily flashy, nothing so "textbook" that you can find the same thing written everywhere else, but rather a free posting of of an admirably comprehensive collection of facts, allusions, coincidences, and perceptions that give due credit to the subject matter. Why such a novel would be banned anywhere; how it could somehow not find its way into the hands of a teen is just beyond me. I could have used this when I was 15, I really could have.
