Sweeneys book reads like fiction which it mostly is. He was ill prepared for the second A mission and blames all his problems on someone else. He was not the CO of the 393rd BS except for the month or two after we arrived on Tinian. I put the 393rd together at Fairmont AAB Neb. and with the help of a few good men trained a great outfit that got little credit for what they did. Sweeney had nothing to do with it. He flew
the second mission because he was one of Tibbets buddies.

The first us planes to land at atsugi airstrip was on August 28th 1945. Prior to the surrender.
They were c-47's and there were 147
military personnel on them.
They were there to set up communications to support the fighters that were doing round the clock cover
overhead. And also to help setup the airstrip for
use.
Try again.

Nice job on the site.
Good job in tracking down all the info. Once you begin to put two or more points together, the rest just falls into place.
Congratulations!

Hey Sam - I'm an AF (ours) vet of the Korean 'Police Action'. A friend of mine (WWII vet) was multi-engine rated (B25, B24, B17) and was at Tinian - after the Enola Gay dropped. Anyway, I asked him (for his sake, let's call him Bill Gibson - his real name) if he knew the name of the B29 which dropped Fat Man at Nagasaki. Bill knows absolutely everything, but could not come up the the answer. Well - nanner, nanner, nanner. I simply went to Ask Jeeves and found out and, to my pleasant surprise, your site as well. So now, come Saturday, I'll be able to s*** in Bill's mess kit! He loves to brag that he was a 19-year old second lieutenant. BFD. I was a 19-year old buck sergeant - wow .... some officers never change!! Bill will undoubtedly tell me he helped Icarus get his wings, soloed at Kittyhawk with those two bicycle shop guys and helped Fred Noonan and Amelia chart their course! With much glee I will inform Bill that the name of the B29 was "Bock's Car".
Your site is great - whoever the A-hole is who typed "you suck" needs to get his head out of his body cavity. Thanks, Sam, for caring - and you have a ton of reasons to be proud of your uncle!
Bob
P.S. While on Guam, I had the privilege of being a 'guest' of a buddy of mine, Ron Beck, who was a crew member of the 69th Weather Wing on two 'eye of the typhoon' flights on a B29. Great airplane! See you at the NCO club.
