My dad was a sergeant in the 142nd General Hospital division. Among other duties, he was in charge of operating the PX when he wasn't on duty in the hospital. They were stationed in Australia; Calcutta, India; New Zealand; and finally, on the Fiji Islands. His name was Clarence Sterner. He passed away in December, 1999. I have a list of all the members of the 142nd. and most of my dad's letters to my mom. One of his fondest memories was leaving Suva, Fiji and hearing the natives singing "Now is the Hour" to them as the ship pulled out for home.

This morning, Oct. 4, 2003, I attended a memorial service at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO, for the victims (POWs)of the Palawan Massacre on Dec. 14, 1944. I was not aware of this horrific brutality upon our POWs. It was very moving and emotional to hear the personal stories of two of it's survivors. I have always personally thanked and shown respect to veterans I meet, but today as I went to pay my respect to the fallen heroes, I gained a greater sense of respect and admiration for our servicemen and what each one sacrificed by serving our country. My father, Nade Peters, drafted in 1943 at age 18, a veteran of WWII, served in the Army with the Transportation Corps. Thank you Dad and thank all of you for what you did for our country. God bless you all

My dad, Robert C. Alexander, was a B-24 pilot with the 744th Bomb Squardon, 456th Bomb Group. His plane was shot down over Budapest, Hungary July 2, 1944. Of the 11 men on board, 5 were killed. THe rest were taken POW. Dad was the only member of the crew uninjured.

The crew was comprised of the following men. Sorry but I only have last names.

Pilot: Hendrickson (KIA)
Co Pilot: Alexander (POW)
Bombadier: Bruegman (KIA)
Nose Gunner: Phillips (KIA)
Top Gunner: Constable (KIA)
Tail Gunner: Mack (KIA)
?: Wagner (POW)
Radio Op: Richardson (POW)
Ball Turret gunner: Weidrick (POW)
Engineer: Plath (POW) (Plath was the Engineer for the day, taking the place of a man named Pope)

Dad was sent first to Stalag Luft III (Sagan) and then to Stalag Luft VIIA (Moosburg). I have a number of his letters from the Sagan camp, written between 19 July 1944 and 28 December 1944, plus three letters he wrote right after being liberated. I will share these with anyone who might be interested.

In a letter dated 22 December 1944 Dad lists the names of his "roommates". They were:

2nd Lt. Andere G.G., AF - Menard, Texas
2nd Lt Burke, G.W. - Westfield, N.J.
1st Lt Burnett, T.D. - Bartow, Fla
2nd Lt Epps, M.F. - Knoxville, Tenn
2nd Lt Esty, H.C. - Hawkins, Wis
2nd Lt Gavenda, W.F. - Chicago Heights, Ill
2nd Lt Hopewell, H.C. - Dallas, Tex
1st Lt Peeples, H. C. - Atlanta, Ga
1st Lt Pinson W.H. - Atlanta, Ga
1st Lt Pletta, J.H. - Chicago, Ill
Capt Wilson, M.V. - Alamosa, Colo
2nd Lt Linsay, N(?).V. - Washington, D.C.
2nd Lt Witt, R.V. - LaMoure, North Dakota

I would be interested in hearing from anyone connected to any of the men mentioned in this message.

Dad stayed in the USAF until the mid-60's, retiring as a Lt. Col. He continued to fly up until his retirement.

Dad passed away in February, 1997. He rarely spoke of his experiences in WWII except in the most general terms. I appreciate this site in giving me more insight into his experiences.

My husband was a pilot in the 8th Air Force, 388th Bomb Group. He and pilot Edward Wick were shot down in their B17, "Wolfpack" over Stuttgart Germany on Sep 6, 1943. Their base in England was Knettishall. They reported there in May 1943, and flew 9 missions. Three of the crew did not survive the B17 as a Messerschmidt came in from behind. The plane was on fire, in a spiral, and one wing came off. I would like to see Allan B. Lemley's name listed in your POW list!

My father was in France in the middle of July in the 134th Infantry serving General Pattons Third Army. Was in several battles at the front in St. Lo. Really don't know much about his time served as he never would talk about it. My father passed away April 1990 and was a real hero and my best friend. Am very proud of all you war heros. One short story that sticks in my head to this day about Dad was there was a parade uptown and we were all sitting on the back of a pick-up. When they marched by with the Flags we stood up and saluted. Dad seen someone not remove his cap and he went balistic. Always show Respect!!!!!
Thanks,
Deb

My father, Herman M. Brosch, was with the 3rd Bn ('X' Battalion) 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. He and his battalon jumped into Sicly near Gela as pathfinders for the assault elements of the 82nd. They never arrived. We all know why. He was wounded and captured several days later and after several weeks found himself in Stalag 2B near Stolp in Poland. I am a retired Army colonel, and now a writer. I am writing his story, and that of all men interred at Stalag 2b. Please contact me. My father is alive and lives in Revloc, Pennsylvania.

Today I say a prayer for my friend Pete Wygle, who passed away yesterday, 23 September, 2003.
As a young man away from home for the first time, I was treated like a member of his own family, welcomed into his home for Thanksgiving and Christmas each year.
He will never know how much this meant to me.
He and his wonderful wife Nancy are family to me.
I will miss his wisdom and incredible wit.
God bless you, Pete, and thank you.

My uncle was an enlisted man. He was part of a detachment trained in Ireland and served with the British Commandos. He was captured behind enemy lines right before the Battle of Kasserine Pass. My uncle is alive, but not in great health. He was held for approximately 23 months. I am looking for anyone who may have known him. I know that since he was enlisted he was probably not known to many officers. I am hoping that perhaps other surviving enlisted men may have known him.
Further, I have the utmost respect for the men and women that saved the world at that time. God Bless you All.
