Name: Hometown: Hemet, CA. 92544 Sent: 11.05 PM - 1/9 I am a 78 year old grandma, raising my 12 year old Grandson, who badly needs motivation, and a goal. He is a poor student, who doesn't seem to think or care about his future. I need to instill im him some old fashioned Horatio Alger philosophy, for I won't always be here to take care of him. Has anyone out there got a book for my boy Scott? Name: Hometown: Soulsbyville, CA Sent: 9.00 PM - 12/16 It was a rainy day. I had always been fascinated by the two shelves of books above the "secretary" drop-down desk. Since I was only eight years old, I always looked for books with some pictures and small words. I selected one of the thin red cover books from the upper shelf, sat on the sofa and couldn't put it down. I read the two others as well, and am convinced that these three Horatio Alger adventure stories changed my life forever. Sink or Swim, and Do and Dare, both from 1909 and in good condition. I don't expect to get rich but I am curious as to how much these two would be worth. Name: Hometown: Los Angeles Sent: 3.55 AM - 9/21 I have 11 - I believe original editions - of Algers' books. 10 are published between 1871 and 1898, the other is 1905. All but 2 are in very good condition; the other two are in good shape. I am not yet putting this on ebay, but would be interested in knowing if anyone would want to purchase/know more about them. Name: Hometown: Tillsonburg Sent: 12.44 AM - 9/10 Believe it or no but im related to Horatio Alger. Name: Hometown: Green Valley, AZ Sent: 8.12 PM - 7/9 I have a collection of over 30 Alger books, and have enjoyed reading them immensely. In Alger's day incredibly immoral, illiterate, and vulgar people, some of whom have added their views here, wouldn't have had a forum like this to "express" themselves! Name: Hometown: NYC Sent: 10.52 AM - 7/8 I was up in Maine for the 4th of July last week and came across a Horatio Alger book at a barn sale - Shifting for Himself. I had always heard about Alger at school when studying American literature. I was thrilled to have the chance to actually read one of his books. I took it home and read it while visiting with my friends. I thoroughly enjoyed it and now understand why Alger is said to have such an important place in the development of the "American Dream" myth! Name: Sent: 11.43 AM - 7/2 Ecscuse me leo reick , But could you define sucsess for me?(This is a person that left a message just up ahed) Some people think of sucsess as having a well paid job. Others like for example (probably miss spelled that) Michael moore i think would define it in quite another way. He want's to make the life of the poor better. See, mr Reich, Some people get fucked over by society. Poor schools. Bad childhood. Even just going to school can fuck a teenager up for life. The us of a works for those that are fortunate to have gotten that zest for competition and winning. The rest can litteraly fuck off and that's not a ethikal way trough this life. Sucsess is making this place better, and i am going to work Hard for that. Not work hard in a system where the rich folks get the dollars, and spend em pursewing their twisted values behind their deffenition of sucsess. Name: Hometown: Thornhill, Ontario, Canada Sent: 10.03 PM - 6/3 My father, Charles Mist, was an avid reader of the Horatio Alger books, when he was young. The mist family emigrated to Canada in 1912, and Charles admired and was inspired to follow the ideals of horatio Alger. From very modest means, he worked his way up in the insurance busines, always following the ideals of haed work and honesty. Charles was very success ful in the insurance business, and worked for over 54 years, becoming the regional manager of the Boston Insurance Company in Eastern Canada, he also was chairman of the local schoolboard in Toronto. I will try to locate at least one of the Alger Books, as a wonderful addition to our family history. Horatio Alger must have inspired countless young people to succeed and to do their best. Best wishes, Judy Fleming (nee Mist) Name: Sent: 12.48 AM - 5/27 My late father was an avid Horatio Alger reader and a collector for many years. He was also a member of the Horatio Alger Society and would be very pleased to see your website. Congratulations on a great job! Name: Homepage: Hometown: CA, USA Sent: 4.54 PM - 5/23 I find it amazing that everyone can read stories by Horatio Alger about starving young children in America (or anywhere) & not see that those children were slaves who should NOT have been starving, & they should have been able to become doctors & scientists instead of being so poor. They HAD to work for a wage or starve because they were slaves, just like all adults were, and still are today. Millions of children died because of that poverty, so how could anyone not see that the wage system then, as now, is slavery? Most companies never should have existed to "create jobs" anyway because we should have built only live/work Towers connected to Trains. I don't understand how so many people can be so blinded by the world's subtle lies>>>Capitalist lies that teach us to be slaves for wages because no one thinks the wage is slavery!??? See my website called "Employees are slaves, & so are masters." Name: Hometown: Central Islip, N.Y. 11722 Sent: 2.16 AM - 5/20 I just return from the 2004 Horatio Alger Society Convention in DeKalb, Ill. My sister Linda J. Sohl(nee Downie) with her husband Bill and myself assisting gave a great presentation on the relationship between the "Downie boys-John M.Downie and Edward Downie and our families"and also how Horatio Alger influence our lives. John M. Downie and Edward Downie was used as characters in three of Algers books-"Chester Rand", "Mark Mannings Mission" and "Driven From Home". The first two "John Downie" was used and the third "Edward Downie" was used. John Downie was our Grandfather and Edward was Our grandfathers brother. We also want to thank Mr. Arthur Young for giving us the opportunity to present this information. We also want to thank him and his staff for their warmth and hospitality. We all had a great time-"Dash to DeKalb II" Name: Hometown: Minneapolis, MN Sent: 6.18 PM - 5/6 I just discovered Horatio Alger and I am overwhelmed with what I have been reading on this website. I plan to become more familier with the writings and history of the organization. I have been trying to find a way to discribe what has gone on in my life all these years and now see that there have been others that have quietly overcame life distroying situations. This is great.
