Australia Sent: 11.26 AM - 2/28 My father, George Louis Browne, was born in Greco Cottages, Salvador, Tooting, on 7th August, 1892, to John Albert Browne and Ellen Browne (nee. Chandler). Any information regarding him or his family would be greatly appreciated. Name: Hometown: Bribie Island. Australia. Sent: 8.20 PM - 2/15 Greetings from ' Down Under ', My connection with Tooting dates back to 1852. My Grandmother was born there -- In that era Tooting was in Surrey. Now, I'm told it is a Borough of London. Her name as at date of birth was Emma Louisa Nicholls. Perhaps there may be some relative still living in the region ? Kind regards to One and All, Max Knudsen. Name: Sent: 10.14 PM - 1/16 In my previous message I should have said I lived in Tooting 1947-1965 (not 1937!) - although I am getting older, I am not quite on my bus pass yet! Name: Sent: 10.12 PM - 1/16 I grew up in St.Cyprians Street Tooting 1937-1965 when I got married & moved to Streatham. I went to Franciscan infants, Franciscan Juniors then Garratt Green. There were lots of baby boomer children in St Cyprians street & we all used to play out in the summer holidays as there were not all the cars about then. From about `961-1963 I had a saturday job in the market opposite Eggees (just down from Julie Chivers, whose memories appear above - she lived next door to me and our friendship endures down the years). I loved working in the market on saturdays because I could hear all the music and the music of that era is still the best. I live in Carshalton now and work in Mitcham so I haven't gone too far. Between 1969-975 I worked at Donovans Solicitors right on Tooting Broadway (closed down now). My mum grew up in Tooting too, and told me that when she was a little girl Kellino Street was known as "Killemoff Street". My mum remembered Tooting Broadway Tube Station being built and London Transport had to tunnel down so deep & had so many problems with the River Graveney that when it opened all the local children could ride up and down the tube line free for the whole day (Couldn't let your kids do that on their own nowadays!). Anyone who knew me & wants to write to me (or shares some of my memories) please e.mail me. Name: Hometown: PECKHAM LONDON Sent: 12.15 PM - 1/2 I have for some time been trying to contact anyone that was at the Ensham County School in Totting from 1948/1953 originally Mrs Goring's form. I grew up in Rostella Rd. and went to Smallwood Rd. School. My father and his brothers also attended Smallwood Rd. they lived in Thurso Street. That V1 bomb fell before I was born. My father was on Naval Reserve and had been working on war work in Sheffield, York. when he fell and broke his back he spent the rest of the war recovering. The day the V1 fell, he and his brother were going to go fishing. Dad was running late and said he would catch up. Between their leavings the bomb fell, and on his way fishing, via Hazelhurst, dad helped pull people from the wreckage. He suffered nightmares for years after, wondering if they had inadvertently left someone alive in the rubble. Hazel Francis was a girl two or three years older than me and her parents were killed by that bomb and she was brought up by her grandmother. When I was in Mr. Holland's class he often used to call me Hazel by mistake, because of her surname. I'm living in Australia. Name: Hometown: TOOTING Sent: 10.07 AM - 8/8 I've been living in Western Australia for 35 years. Am in touch with some girls from ENSHAM, hoping to arrange a reunion. Charles and Jane Engberg Iwas in Tooting last September, 2000, Elites is still there but over the road opposite the Fountain pub. Original building is an asian supermarket. Graham Sutton, Smith Bros. no longer has the little overhead tramlines for money boxes to run along, in fact it's not a patch on what it use to be. My father was born in Selkirk Rd. in 1913 and said when he was growing up it was countrified with a lot of farm land belonging to the Bell family. Name: Sent: 11.13 PM - 7/30 Just happened upon this site, I was born and brought up in Tooting leaving at the age of 21 in 1971. As well as the cinemas mentioned I remember the Vogue opposite the Fox (where they built BHS). I do remember the bubble gum factory and remember looking through the letter box at all the sheets of chewing gum. In Tooting market, which ran from Totterdown to the High Street was a shop call Eggies, which sold cheese, cold meats etc. I first lived in Garratt Lane, my parents owned a cafe called the Silver Thimble, next to Tooting Tyre Service. We then moved to Gatton Road and finally on to Gassiot Road. I attended, Waldron Road Infants School, then Broadwater Road Juniors and lastly Ensham Secondary Modern in Fransican Road. Tooting has changed considerably since I lived there, but one memory I have is that you knew everybody if not to speak to, by sight. Enjoy the trek down memory lane! Name: Hometown: Sydney Sent: 11.32 PM - 7/25 Greetings Tooting, I worked for a year at the Gorringe Park Hotel at Tooting Junction (92-93) and was regularly assailed by the eccentric attentions of the somewhat notorious local: Nick Jackson. Does anyone here know/remember Nick? I mean he's a bit hard to ignore isn't he? He drinks a bit, has a bit of limp (hit by various vehicles in his time), has eyebrows with a 90 degree angle in them, wears several jumpers to keep warm in Winter, has an extraordinary sense of humour (a la Peter Cook), is banned from most pubs (and the wine bars), drinks a bit, drinks mostly in YOungs pubs as he has a taste for Special, likes crosswords, has a cat called "Bastard", was a regular (when he wasn't barred) at the Gorringe Park HOtel in 92-93 and he used to light up our day behind the bar when he came in - always hilarious. I'd really like to hear how (or if) he's going - he was a good mate. Number of messages: 150 [ ] |
